Beat Q&A: Kaylin Riley

Why I wrote the story...

This story highlights a Transition Leader at the University of Georgia. Under my JOUR3090: News Writing & Reporting I course, I entered the Diversity and Equity beat to which I began my research in university resources available to students. As a transfer student, I found it insightful to hear from the leader's perspective and their efforts in reaching students from varying educational backgrounds. Using my public relations background, I  utilized my network, communication skills and personability in tangent with my journalistic skills to reveal a deeper understanding of Transition Leaders such as Kaylin Rylie.

News Conference Story

Why I wrote the story...

After attending a news conference on the University of Georgia campus, I had the opportunity to hear Mayor Girtz of Athens-Clarke County share his Future Land Use Plan proposal. This hour-long assembly covered many topics ranging from affordable housing policies, initiatives aiding in homelessness and preparation for the 30,000 population increase projected for 2045. Through a series of public surveys, district commissioners and the mayor have been working to create a plan in favor of the city's residents. In writing this story, I highlighted the conversation of gentrification and displacement as a result of the strategic plan. As both a journalist and student studying public relations, I wanted to consider a variety of perspectives that contribute to the future of Athens-Clarke County.

Event Preview Story: BeWellUGA

Why I wrote the story...

This event preview story showcases the BeWellUGA festival at the University of Georgia hosted by Student Affairs. While attending this event I got to interview many organizations that contribute to student engagement and well-being on campus. I wrote this story to share with the university student body and faculty what resources are available to them in both an informative and entertaining space. Showing what the event is known for, what to expect and takeaway with details provided by Lisa Williamson, associate director of fitness, well-being and student engagement. Tying both public relations and journalism in one, I reported live from the event with a series of Instagram stories with real-time AP style captions adhering to the policies under my JOUR3090: News Writing & Reporting I course.

Ad Redesign: Eagle Bakery

In redesigning this digital advertisement for Eagle Bakery, I considered its use. For online, or social media content I wanted to create something simple and accessible as a consumer. By using Adobe Photoshop I developed a color palette, relevant elements, and the same text as the "before" image. A redesign like this one is optimal for Instagram, Facebook or other social media applications.
